If you’ve ever wondered what it means to do the Humanities, or why the Humanities matter to the world – and to you – we invite you to join us at the Santa Cruz Museum of Art & History (MAH) on Saturday, April 21 for an afternoon of exploration.
Starting at 1:00 p.m., the UC Santa Cruz Institute for Humanities Research will host a series of panels and poster presentations at the MAH to answer your questions about the Humanities, and to showcase the research of the Faculty and Graduate Fellows in the Humanities from across the University of California. Panel topics include the power of language, religion and modernity, and empire and nation. Poster presentations cover research on the ethnography of disasters, feminist art, slavery and cannibalism, the criminalization of religious practice, party-crashing in Arabic medieval literature, the inevitable fate of the novel, and more.
Bring your family and friends (kids are more than welcome)! The event and the museum will be free and open to the public. In conjunction with ‘What Are We Doing When We Do the Humanities,’ the MAH is featuring the highly anticipated ‘All You Need Is Love’ exhibition, which explores the many ways that love is manifest in our everyday lives. The artworks and historical objects on display reflect everything from passionate love stories to love gone wrong to the fierce love between mother and child. In the Love Lounge, you can learn about relationships in Santa Cruz County history, sing along to an old love song, and even write your own love letter. You’ll have an opportunity to throw a DIY wedding in Elizabeth Stephens and Annie Sprinkle’s Love Chapel, explore love gone wrong-and right through historic artifacts and contemporary artworks, play games to determine your love style, and share stories of family experiences.
All visitors are eligible to enter a raffle for items donated by local Santa Cruz businesses and organizations. Raffle items include: Kuumbwa Jazz tickets, a Literary Guillotine gift certificate, a haircut by Nick Saporito at L’Atelier salon, an acupuncture session at the Cold Spring Healing Arts, a Tai Chi class at The Academy of Martial and Internal Arts Studio, a gift certificate for an intimate oyster bar from Intertidal Aquafarms, and free MAH membership.
